PHILLIP HAD LEFT CLARENCE in charge with a lighter heart than he’d expected. Despite the older man’s continued gruffness, he treated Marjorie with gentleness and respect—and just the amount of firmness needed to get that stubborn lady to take it easy for at least one day.

He still intended to convince her to see a doctor sooner rather than later. The light-headedness that she blamed for her fall had to be caused by something, and he wouldn’t let her ignore it. But that argument could wait for a couple of days. In the meantime, he’d keep a closer eye on her.

When he finally made it into the Twin Rivers office, he wasn’t sure whether to be pleased or chagrined that no one seemed to have missed him. It was a good thing the place continued to run smoothly without his presence, given the unexpected amounts of time he’d taken off recently. Dexter was right—he should be proud that his company was doing so well, that his boys had grown up to be independent men. And he was.

But he was also rather thrilled that Marjorie had asked him to help find Joseph. It was nice to be needed. Maybe that was the root of his restlessness—he wanted to feel necessary again.

Just before three o’clock, he was wrapping up one last task with the intent of leaving early and heading back to Marjorie’s when his cell rang, indicating a call from Aubrey. He couldn’t stop—didn’t want to stop—the smile that curved his lips. With all the unexpected events of the day, he hadn’t spent much time thinking of their kisses, though the memory had tickled just under the surface of his skin. He’d been surprised that she’d made the first move, and though her kiss had been no more than a chaste peck on the cheek, his body had reacted as if she’d wrapped her naked form around him. And he hadn’t been the only one physically affected. Her eyes had dilated when he’d told her he liked the new Aubrey, and she hadn’t retreated when he given her his own soft kiss. He loved how dazed she’d looked after such an innocent exchange and wondered what she’d be like if he ever focused on seducing her.

That was a thought...

His phone rang again and he snatched it up.

“Am I interrupting something?” Her voice curled out of the speaker and into his belly. “I talked with Clarence and Marjorie, so I know your day has been a bit of a mess. If you don’t have time right now...”

“No, I’m good. You heard about Marjorie’s fall, then?” It hadn’t crossed his mind to let her know what had happened. He’d have to remember to do so in future. After all, Marjorie would soon be her stepmother. That fact hadn’t quite sunk in.

“Yes. She said she was dizzy. Do you think she has low blood pressure, or maybe low blood sugar? It was first thing in the morning.”

“Both are possible. I plan to browbeat her into seeing a doctor soon.
